Jon Matthews Mesothelioma Bet On Life

Jon Matthews, pictured above, has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma in April 2006, and he is currently making bets that he will outlive his doctor’s predictions. As of now, Matthews has won $16,000 and now he’s has won a little something extra that he hadn’t planned for – a date!

A match-making company in Seoul, South Korea called Sunoo learned about Matthew’s story and the chief executive, Lee Woong-jin decided to help, saying, “I wanted to tell him personally that his actions not only affected his life, but also gave hope to people worldwide who are dealing with devastating life situations.”

Seoul is flying a woman from their match-making company to Britain to visit with Matthews and go on a date with him. Matthews even got to create the list of possible dating partners before Sunoo chose which woman to send to him.

Matthews may even get more than one date from the Sunoo company, as up until July 26 any interested woman can sign up to win a date with him.

Matthews was told in 2006, when he was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, that he would not make it to December of that year, however the doctors negativity inspired Matthews to try harder to live, however it was not until June 2008 that he began betting on his life.

Every June Matthews has collected winnings from those betting, just receiving his second round of money last month. If Matthews survives until next June 2010 he will receive an additional $16,500.

Matthews has an unusual personality for a man who has been given news that he is dying. He says, “Just because I’m dying, it doesn’t mean I can’t have fun. I smoke 30 cigarettes a day, enjoy a pint and like the occasional flutter (small bet), especially when I’m winning. When a doctor or a surgeon says you are going to die, why should I believe it? Don’t take situations and setbacks as permanent. They never are.”
