The Journal of the American Medical Association has just published a study that looks into the deaths in the United States caused by Mesothelioma between the years 1999 and 2005.
The study showed that there were 18,068 deaths between these years caused by Mesothelioma. 95% of the deaths occurred in men and 80% of those men were white. In addition, five states exceeded the national average of deaths due to Mesothelioma. These states are:
- Washington
- New Jersey
- Wyoming
- Pennsylvania
- West Virginia
The deaths due to Mesothelioma in the United States are expected to reach an all time high and peak in the year 2010. This is because Mesothelioma shows itself 20 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos, and asbestos was not used in the United States after the year 1973. While there is still asbestos in many buildings, when it is discovered it is removed or dealt with, so because of this it is expected that by the year 2055 there will be few cases of Mesothelioma in the US.
